Synopsis: Kothari Industrial Corporation has announced that Evervan Kothari Footwear, a subsidiary of its associate company, will commence construction of its Adidas footwear manufacturing facility in Karur, Tamil Nadu, with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for July 10 in the presence of the state’s Chief Minister.
India is rapidly emerging as a preferred global footwear manufacturing destination as international brands diversify sourcing beyond China. Backed by government support for labour-intensive manufacturing, improving export infrastructure, and Tamil Nadu’s established leather ecosystem, global brands are increasingly partnering with Indian manufacturers to build large-scale production facilities.
Shares of Kothari Industrial Corporation were trading at Rs. 172, up 3.12 percent during Thursday’s session, compared to the previous close of Rs. 166.79. The stock has touched a 52-week high of Rs. 625 and a low of Rs. 142, with a market capitalisation of Rs. 1,858crore.
What’s the News?
Kothari Industrial Corporation Limited has informed the stock exchanges that Evervan Kothari Footwear Private Limited, a subsidiary of its associate company Phoenix Kothari Footwear Private Limited, will hold the groundbreaking ceremony for its footwear manufacturing facility at Karur, Tamil Nadu, on July 10, 2026.
The upcoming plant will manufacture footwear for global sportswear giant Adidas, marking a significant milestone in the group’s diversification into large-scale contract footwear manufacturing. The ceremony will be attended by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, highlighting the strategic importance of the project for the state’s manufacturing and employment ecosystem.
The company has also arranged a live webcast of the ceremony for shareholders through video conferencing. Interested shareholders have been requested to register their participation by emailing the company secretary, following which access details will be shared.
The latest announcement follows the company’s earlier Vision 2030 roadmap unveiled in June 2026, under which the Karur project is expected to begin Adidas production from July 2026 and gradually scale up to an annual manufacturing capacity of nearly 80 million pairs of footwear, making it one of the largest footwear manufacturing initiatives in the country.
Financial & Business Analysis
While the groundbreaking marks an important strategic milestone, investors should note that it represents the beginning of construction rather than the commencement of commercial production. The financial benefits will depend on execution timelines, commissioning schedules, customer order ramp-up, and plant utilisation over the coming years.
If successfully executed, the Adidas manufacturing project could significantly diversify Kothari Industrial’s business model, which has historically relied on fertilisers, leasing income and other emerging businesses. Long-term contract manufacturing for a global brand typically offers better revenue visibility through sustained production commitments and export opportunities.
However, the project’s ownership structure is also important. The manufacturing facility is being developed by a subsidiary of the company’s associate entity, meaning the eventual earnings contribution to the listed company will depend on the equity ownership and accounting treatment adopted once operations commence.
On the financial front, the company reported consolidated revenue of Rs. 178 crore in FY26, more than doubling from Rs. 87 crore in FY25. However, it posted a consolidated net loss of Rs. 72 crore, compared with a loss of Rs. 16 crore in the previous year, reflecting higher operating costs and investments across its expanding businesses.
Return ratios remain under pressure, with ROCE at negative 28.9 percent and ROE at negative 35 percent. Debtor days increased to around 70 days from 23 days a year earlier, indicating rising working capital requirements. The company’s interest coverage also remains weak despite maintaining a relatively moderate debt-to-equity ratio of 0.25 times, highlighting the importance of disciplined capital allocation as multiple expansion projects progress simultaneously.
Industry & Strategic Analysis
The Karur project aligns with the broader global trend of sportswear brands diversifying manufacturing away from China and expanding sourcing across India and Southeast Asia. Tamil Nadu already hosts a well-developed footwear and leather manufacturing ecosystem, providing skilled labour, supplier networks and export infrastructure that can support large-scale production.
For Kothari Industrial, the Adidas project represents one of its most ambitious diversification initiatives alongside its recent expansion into drones, hospitality and agrochemicals. While these new businesses provide multiple growth avenues, they also require significant management execution and capital discipline, especially given the company’s current financial profile.
The proposed scale of nearly 80 million pairs annually could position the footwear business as a major long-term revenue driver if capacity utilisation ramps up as planned. At the same time, investors are likely to monitor project execution, funding arrangements, customer offtake commitments and the extent to which profits generated by the associate-company structure ultimately accrue to shareholders of the listed entity.
Company Overview
Kothari Industrial Corporation Limited, incorporated in 1970 and headquartered in Chennai, is a diversified business group with interests spanning fertilisers, agrochemicals, FMCG products, hospitality, drone services and footwear manufacturing through its associate companies. The company is listed on both the BSE and NSE.
