Synopsis: Three of India’s top carmakers released their May 2026 sales data. One hit an all-time record, one posted the strongest growth, and one held its ground in a competitive month.
India’s passenger vehicle market closed May 2026 on a strong note, with multiple automakers reporting double-digit year-on-year growth. The month reflected sustained consumer demand across segments – from compact cars and SUVs to utility vehicles – even as some players flagged supply chain pressures. Here is how the numbers stacked up across the top three listed players.
May 2026 Sales Scorecard: Who Sold the Most?
Maruti Suzuki India Limited emerged as the clear volume leader in May 2026, reporting total sales of 2,42,688 units – its highest-ever monthly sales volume. Domestic sales also hit an all-time high of 1,93,535 units, up sharply from 1,38,690 units in May 2025.
Within domestic passenger vehicle sales, the compact and mid-size car segment – comprising Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR – led with 81,555 units. Utility vehicles including Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris, and XL6 contributed 79,267 units. The mini car segment (Alto and S-Presso) added 16,275 units, while Eeco vans accounted for 13,240 units. Light commercial vehicle Super Carry contributed 3,198 units. Sales to other OEMs stood at 7,239 units, and exports came in at 41,914 units.
In the first two months of FY27 (April–May), Maruti’s total sales reached 4,82,334 units against 3,59,868 units in the same period of FY26, reflecting broad-based momentum across segments.
Mahindra Clocks Strongest Growth Rate
Mahindra & Mahindra posted the strongest year-on-year growth rate among the three, with overall auto sales rising 20% to 99,636 units in May 2026. Domestic SUV sales grew 11% to 58,021 units. Commercial vehicles (LCV below 3.5T) added 24,079 units domestically, a 19% rise. Exports surged 37% to 5,000 units. The company flagged supply chain challenges due to manpower shortages at select suppliers as a constraint on further growth.
Mahindra’s farm equipment business also had a strong month. Domestic tractor sales rose 23% year-on-year to 47,845 units in May 2026, driven by timely completion of Rabi harvesting and favourable terms of trade for farmers. Total tractor sales including exports stood at 49,695 units, up 22% from 40,643 units a year ago.
Mahindra’s Trucks and Buses business (MTBD + SML combined) sold 3,129 vehicles in May 2026, a growth of 18% year-on-year. Passenger vehicle sales within this segment grew 32% to 1,976 units, though the company noted near-term headwinds from elevated input costs and higher diesel prices.
Hyundai Holds Steady With Double-Digit Domestic Growth
Hyundai Motor India Limited reported domestic sales of 47,837 units in May 2026, a growth of 9.1% year-on-year. Including exports of 13,300 units, total monthly sales stood at 61,137 units, up 4.1% year-on-year. In the April-May FY27 period, HMIL’s cumulative domestic sales rose 13% to 99,739 units from 88,235 units in the same period of FY26.
The Takeaway
In volume terms, Maruti Suzuki was untouchable in May 2026, crossing a historic high. Mahindra led on growth momentum, with the 20% overall surge reflecting strong demand across SUVs, commercial vehicles, and farm equipment. Hyundai showed steady performance, maintaining its position as the second-largest domestic passenger vehicle seller. Together, the three companies painted a bullish picture of India’s auto sector heading into FY27.
