Synopsis: Rail Vikas Nigam has received a letter of award from South Central Railway’s Vijayawada Division for upgrading the overhead electrification system on the 154 RKM Ongole-Gudur stretch from a 1x25kV to a more capable 2x25kV AT feeding arrangement, at a contract value of Rs. 242.50 crore; execution is to be completed within 24 months, with shares trading marginally lower on Monday tracking a weak broader market.
Shares of the Navratna railway PSU came into focus on Monday after the company disclosed receipt of a letter of award from South Central Railway for overhead electrification work in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada Division.
With a market capitalization of approximately Rs. 53,553.74 crore, the shares of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited were trading at Rs. 256.85 per share, down 1.46 percent from its previous closing price of Rs. 260.66. It is trading at a P/E of approximately 54.03.
Order update
The letter of award covers the design, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of overhead equipment for the upgradation of the existing 1x25kV traction system to a 2x25kV Auto Transformer (AT) feeding system, along with feeder and earthing works, on the Ongole (OGL) to Gudur (GDR) section of the Vijayawada Division.
The section spans 154 route kilometres and 462 track kilometres, covering a corridor that runs along Andhra Pradesh’s southern coastline on the busy trunk route between Vijayawada and Chennai. The contract value is Rs. 242.50 crore inclusive of applicable taxes, with a 24-month execution window. It is a domestic contract under standard general conditions with no related party interest.
Technical and strategic context
The shift from a 1x25kV to a 2x25kV AT feeding system is not cosmetic. The conventional 1x25kV arrangement draws power from a single conductor, limiting the current that can be drawn before voltage drops affect train performance.
The 2x25kV system uses auto-transformers placed at regular intervals along the track, effectively doubling the usable voltage, reducing distribution losses, and allowing heavier or faster trains to operate on the same section without performance degradation. Indian Railways has been progressively rolling out this architecture on high-density corridors as part of its capacity and throughput enhancement programme.
The Ongole-Gudur corridor sees dense freight and passenger traffic as part of the East Coast mainline, which connects major steel, cement, and port hubs in Andhra Pradesh. The upgrade positions the section to handle higher axle loads and faster services without additional traction infrastructure.
At Rs. 242.50 crore, this contract adds a further incremental order to RVNL’s pipeline. Against FY25 revenue of Rs. 19,923 crore, the order is not individually material, but sustained inflow of mid-sized rail electrification contracts keeps the execution pipeline active through a period when overall revenue has moderated.
