Why Did Adani Enterprises Share Hit 10% Upper Circuit?

Synopsis: Adani Enterprises shares hit a 10% upper circuit after a US court allowed a hearing to dismiss SEC charges, easing legal concerns. The development boosted investor confidence, triggered short covering, and improved sentiment. Strong financial performance and clarity on near-term legal timelines further supported the sharp rally in the stock.

Adani Enterprises witnessed a sharp surge in its share price following a key legal development in the US. The court’s decision to allow a preliminary hearing on dismissing SEC charges has reduced uncertainty. This comes alongside steady financial growth, making the stock a focal point for investors in today’s trading session.

With a market cap of Rs 2.66 lakh crore, the shares of Adani Enterprises Ltd hit the 10% UC in today’s trading session and reached a high of Rs 2089.80. When compared to its previous day’s closing price of Rs 1881.30. The shares are trading at a PE of 72.1, whereas their industry’s PE is at 133, and they have given a return of more than 70% in the last 5 years.

The stock prices of the Adani Group companies have rallied after receiving some favorable news from the US District Court. Gautam Adani and his brother, Sagar Adani, were granted permission to conduct a hearing for the dismissal of the charges filed against them by the SEC. The move has generated favorable market sentiments, and the company’s stocks have surged.

The decision made by Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis allows the Adani brothers to request a pre-motion conference, during which they will be able to make a case for the dismissal of the charges. The decision is important because it gives them a chance to have their case heard by the court before making any moves.

The SEC alleges that the Adani brothers were part of a conspiracy to bribe the Indian government and did not disclose all the information about the $750 million bond issuance. Nonetheless, the legal representation for the Adanis insists that there is no evidence that supports the claim.

Furthermore, the defence argues that the case is “impermissibly extraterritorial” since it involved activities within the territory of India, and the bonds were issued in a different market.

Factors That Have Caused The Rally To Continue

As mentioned above, the court’s willingness to consider the dismissal petition has removed the risk of legal proceedings being prolonged in the near term, which was one of the main overhangs for the shares of the Adani Group. This caused the investors to jump in and purchase shares, which led to the stock moving up strongly and reaching its 10% daily upper limit.

Secondly, short covering played an important role behind the sudden rally witnessed by the shares. Traders who had taken short positions on the stock were quick to reverse their trades, given the positive sentiments in the market. Furthermore, the time period by which the dismissal petition is to be filed (before April 30) acts as a near-term catalyst for the market.

Financials

The revenue from operations for the company stood at Rs 24,820 crore in Q3 FY26 compared to the Q3 FY25 revenue of Rs 22,848 crore, up by about 8.6 per cent YoY. Similarly, the net profit stood at Rs 5,727 crore in Q3 FY26, up compared to the Rs 229 crore profit in Q3 FY25.
