How Much Power Does Akash Ambani Actually Have In Reliance?

Synopsis: Akash Ambani owns only a small direct stake in Reliance, yet he sits at the centre of one of India’s most important business empires. As Jio grows and responsibilities shift within the Ambani family, how much influence does he really have today, and what role is he being prepared for next?

Power inside a large business group is not always measured only by shareholding. Sometimes it is measured by the business a person runs, the board positions he holds, the capital he helps attract and the future responsibility given to him. This is why Akash Ambani’s role inside Reliance Industries has become important for investors to understand.

At first glance, his direct ownership does not look very large. The Reliance AGM document shows that Akash Ambani directly holds 1,61,04,042 equity shares of Reliance Industries, equal to 0.12 percent of the company. But the same document also says that Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani, Isha Ambani, Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani together and collectively, through entities controlled by them, hold 41.46 percent equity shares of Reliance Industries. So, while Akash’s direct stake is small, he is part of the family group that controls a major shareholding block.

Who Is Akash Ambani?

Akash Ambani has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Brown University in the United States. He is the Managing Director of Jio Platforms Limited, or JPL. At JPL, Akash is responsible for products and services built around new-age technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain and the internet of things. These technologies are linked to how Reliance wants to build its digital future across commerce, education, healthcare and consumer services.

Under his leadership, Jio crossed the 100 million subscriber mark in less than six months of its launch in 2016 and now serves more than 524 million customers. That links him to one of India’s largest digital consumer platforms.

What Does He Actually Control?

The clearest sign of Akash Ambani’s power is his position at Jio Platforms. The Jio DRHP lists Mukesh Ambani as Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Jio Platforms, while Akash Ambani is the Managing Director. It shows that Mukesh Ambani remains the senior strategic figure, but Akash is placed in the key executive role at Jio Platforms.

Akash is also the Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, the material subsidiary that runs the telecom business. This matters because Jio is not just another business under Reliance. It is the digital arm that connects telecom, broadband, apps, enterprise solutions, devices, cloud, data and artificial intelligence ambitions.

His influence also goes beyond Jio. The filings say he is a Non-Executive Director on the board of Reliance Industries. He has also been on the board of Reliance Retail Ventures Limited since October 2014.

Why Jio Gives Him Real Power

The reason Akash matters so much is simple: Jio is one of Reliance’s most important future-facing businesses. Traditional Reliance was built around oil, petrochemicals and refining. But the newer Reliance story is increasingly built around telecom, retail, digital services, media and new energy.

Jio sits at the centre of the digital part of this story. It has more than 524 million customers, and it is no longer only about mobile connections. The business now touches broadband, digital services, enterprise connectivity and technology platforms. Akash was instrumental in attracting more than USD 20 billion from marquee global investors including Meta and Google and in building strategic partnerships that position JPL as a full-stack technology platform.

This is where his power becomes larger than his 0.12 percent direct stake. He is not powerful because he personally owns a huge percentage of Reliance. He is powerful because he is leading the business that could define Reliance’s next phase in digital technology.

What Changes With Jio’s Public Listing?

The Jio Platforms DRHP shows that the IPO is a fresh issue of up to 270 million equity shares, with no offer for sale mentioned. Reliance Industries is the promoter of Jio Platforms and holds 66.43 percent of JPL as of March 31, 2026. Meta’s affiliate Jaadhu Holdings holds 9.98 percent and Google International holds 7.73 percent.

This matters for Akash’s role. Earlier, Jio was part of the larger Reliance story. Once Jio becomes separately listed, investors will track revenue, margins, debt, investments, customer growth and execution more directly. That means Akash’s leadership will also be watched more directly by the market. In simple terms, the Jio listing does not create Akash’s power. His role already exists. But the listing can make that power more visible.

How Mukesh Ambani Is Dividing The Future

The bigger picture is that Mukesh Ambani appears to be creating clearer responsibilities for the next generation. Akash is the face of Jio and technology. Isha Ambani is associated with Reliance Retail, India’s largest retailer by revenue, profit, reach and scale, with businesses across grocery, consumer electronics and fashion. She has also led digital expansion through Ajio and Tira.

Anant Ambani’s role is linked more closely with corporate strategy, talent development, large transformational projects and Reliance’s transition toward new energy. His areas include solar manufacturing, green hydrogen, circular materials, carbon capture, clean fuels and next-generation energy technologies. He is also the founder of Vantara, the wildlife rescue and conservation initiative in Jamnagar.

So the structure looks clear. Akash is being built around digital and telecom. Isha is being built around retail and consumer businesses. Anant is being built around new energy and sustainability.

So, how much power does Akash Ambani actually have in Reliance? If measured only by direct shareholding, the number is just 0.12 percent. But that would miss the larger picture. Akash sits on the Reliance board, runs Jio Platforms as Managing Director, chairs Reliance Jio Infocomm, has exposure to retail and media. His power comes from responsibility, not just ownership.

Mukesh Ambani still remains the central figure of Reliance. But the filings show that Akash is no longer just the next generation waiting in the background. He is already leading the digital business that could shape Reliance’s future.
