Synopsis: Reliance Industries is in focus after Meta’s arm invested Rs 256.6 crore for a 30% stake in Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited, part of an Rs 853 crore capital infusion. The deal signals a strategic push into enterprise intelligence and digital platforms, strengthening Reliance’s long-term digital growth ambitions.
The shares of this company, which is one of India’s largest conglomerates, with businesses spanning energy, petrochemicals, oil & gas, retail, and telecommunications, were in focus today after the company made a deal with Meta in which it will invest Rs 256.6 crore, acquiring a 30% stake in its intelligence segment.
With a market cap of Rs 18.96 lakh crore, the shares of Reliance Industries Ltd are trading at Rs 1,400 and are trading at a PE of 24.7 compared to its industry PE of 13.9. The shares have given a return of about 34% in the last 5 years.
About the Partnership
Reliance Industries has infused new capital into Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL) and introduced Facebook Overseas Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Meta Platforms, as a strategic partner. REIL has allotted equity shares to the tune of Rs 596.6 crore to Reliance Intelligence and Rs 256.6 crore to Facebook, aggregating to a total infusion of approximately Rs 853 crore.
This development represents a significant change in the ownership structure and indicates a new push in the digital and enterprise intelligence domain. After the allotment, Reliance Intelligence will hold a 70% stake in REIL, and Facebook will hold a 30% stake, making REIL a jointly owned step-down subsidiary. This change in ownership indicates that Reliance is now opening up its digital business to global partnerships while maintaining majority control.
Strategic Implications of the Meta Partnership
The fact that a Meta subsidiary has made an entry into REIL implies that there could be a partnership in enterprise intelligence, digital platforms, and data-driven solutions. With Meta’s global technology expertise and Reliance’s reach in India, this partnership could help enhance digital infrastructure capabilities and drive innovation in enterprise services.
The infusion of Rs 853 crore of capital into REIL also helps to improve the balance sheet of the company, which can now invest in technology development, expansion, and scaling up operations. More importantly, the transaction between REIL and Facebook is not a related party transaction, and the investment made by Reliance Intelligence has been done on an arm’s length basis, which helps to reinforce governance norms.
The strategic implications of this partnership are that Reliance is now furthering its digital strategy by partnering with global technology leaders. Although the financial implications of this partnership may take some time to emerge, the structure of this partnership and the capital infusion indicate that Reliance is now preparing REIL for larger digital growth opportunities in the future.
Financials
The revenue from operations for the company stood at Rs 2.65 lakh crores in Q3 FY26 compared to Q3 FY25 revenue of Rs 2.4 lakh crores, up by about 10 per cent YoY. Similarly, the net profit stood at Rs 22,290 crore in Q3 FY26, up compared to the Rs 21,930 crore profit in Q3 FY25.
