Top 10 Largest Data Centres in the World

Synopsis: Data center is a term used to refer to a facility that houses servers, storage devices, and networking devices used to store, process, and manage digital data. Such facilities provide services to support various internet services such as cloud computing, online banking, social media sites, and streaming services. With the growth of digital technologies, artificial intelligence technologies, and cloud services, there is an increasing demand for large data centers.

Global Data Centre Landscape

The global data center industry is witnessing a strong upcycle, driven by AI, cloud, and digitalization, with players like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud aggressively expanding capacity. Global installed capacity currently stands at around 122 GW, and is expected to nearly double to ~200 GW by 2030, implying a double-digit (~14%) CAGR growth outlook.

In terms of investments, the sector has already seen ~$290 billion annual spending (2024), with hyperscalers alone contributing nearly $200 billion+, and cumulative investments running into hundreds of billions globally. Looking ahead, the industry is entering an investment supercycle, with $1.7 trillion to $3 trillion+ expected by 2030 and even estimates of up to $7 trillion over the next 5 years to support AI-led demand.

Data Centres in India

India has emerged as a significant data centre infrastructure hub in recent times due to increased internet usage, digital services, and high demand for cloud computing solutions. The Digital India initiative and increased usage of smartphones and e-commerce sites have increased data generation in India. Many multinational and domestic companies are investing heavily in large data centre sites in cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. With favorable government initiatives and high demand for data centers, India is likely to witness high growth in data centers in the coming years.
