Synopsis: FIIs are heavily betting on Telecom and Financial Services, which show the highest foreign ownership. Increased stakes in key companies across these sectors highlight strong confidence in India’s digital infrastructure and financial growth story.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have significantly increased their exposure across Indian markets, with strong concentration in select high-growth sectors. Their investment patterns indicate rising confidence in India’s long-term structural growth story.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have significantly consolidated their holdings across key industries, with Telecommunication and Financial Services emerging as their top two high-conviction bets. Together, these sectors represent the highest concentration of foreign capital allocation, reflecting strong global investor confidence in the region’s digital infrastructure and financial systems.
Telecommunication
The Telecommunication sector commands the highest concentration of Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) ownership among all the sectors, standing at 23.32%. This substantial stake indicates strong foreign conviction in the sector’s long-term digital growth and infrastructure expansion.
The rest of the sector’s ownership is primarily dominated by Private Promoters at 47.94% and Mutual Funds at 11.23%, while the Government of India (GOI) holds a smaller 4.89% stake, and retail public participation remains relatively low at 2.28%.
FIIs raised their stake in Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd from 0.05% in Q3FY26 to 0.50% in Q4FY26. Similarly, their holding in RailTel Corporation of India Ltd increased from 3.68% to 3.72% during the same period.
Financial Services
The Financial Services sector is the second most favored destination for foreign capital, with FIIs holding a massive 20.13% of the shareholding pie. Unlike telecom, this sector stands out for its highly institutionalized, distributed ownership structure; Private Promoters hold just 23.00%, which is closely matched by a combined domestic institutional presence of 14.54% from Mutual Funds and 5.20% from Insurance Companies.
Additionally, the Government of India maintains a significant 18.73% stake (reflecting large public sector banking assets), while Retail and High Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs) together account for 8.73% of the sector.
FIIs increased their holding in State Bank of India from 10.34% in Q3FY26 to 11.41% in Q4FY26. They also raised their stake in HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd from 23.99% to 24.45% over the same period. In addition, FIIs increased their holding in Life Insurance Corporation of India from 0.20% to 0.31% in Q4FY26.
